History of Avery’s Bar and Grill
Avery Stephenson was working for a major corporation in Stamford, Connecticut when she was laid off.
To make ends meet, Avery and her belated mother, Lucille Stephenson, started to prepare and deliver
Jamaican meals to friends and family.
What started as a dream; turned out to be a reality. After months of preparing and delivering meals,
the restaurant was born.
In February of 1991, Avery found the perfect location in the business district of South Norwalk, Connecticut.
Her eldest daughter coined the name “Avery’s Little Kitchen”. Since the business venture started from her
mother’s kitchen, the name was well received.

The small but cozy restaurant was designed so that customers could see the cooking area.
With 10 years of success and an array of customers, Avery had to close the thriving restaurant.
In October of 2001, the City of Norwalk exercised their power of eminent domain to build the new location
of the South Norwalk police station. The city then offered to relocate all of the businesses in the
surrounding area.
After several years, Avery with her brother Mark Stephenson found the perfect location. Avery’s Bar & Grill LLC
(fine Jamaican cuisine) had their Grand Opening on Friday, April 25, 2008. The restaurant is located at 121 Wall Street,
(Downtown) Bridgeport, CT.
The restaurant serves authentic Jamaican dishes such as ackee and salt fish, curry goat, rice and peas, plantain,
callaloo, jerk chicken and pork, oxtail, bammy and escovitch fish.
This joint venture is dedicated to their belated mother, Lucille Stephenson.
